Evinrude and Okauchee Lake

This week, an icon originating from our community, is shuttering its doors after 100 years of making motors. Sadly, it was announced this week that the Canadian company BRP, Inc. the manufacturer, of Evinrude outboard engines, announced it will no longer manufacture Evinrudes, marking the end of an iconic Wisconsin brand.
Ole Evinrude, who migrated from Norway to Cambridge, Wisconsin, fashioned his idea for a motor to power his boat when rowing across Okauchee Lake to get his girlfriend Bess an ice cream. His boat was so slow her ice cream melted, thus creating his need to go faster. Over the many years since he first came up with his idea, many innovations and changes have made this motor and company popular. You do not have to look far to find an Evinrude motor, as many are on the lakes in our area.
So many amazing ideas and connections have come from this small community of ours and we have much to be proud of. This rich heritage contributes to the popularity of our community and the number of people who want to move here. We are seeing more people from other cities and states, looking for their next home here in the Lake Country, and it is because of the rich history and beautiful surroundings. People are seeing the events and community activities we offer and want to be a part of the festivals and parades. In this time, when so many of those events we love are not able to be held, embrace our history, welcome new neighbors from other places and find new ways to celebrate what makes this part of the State and Country amazing!
